My friend Craig Prosser of CP Real Designs came by recently to help me decorate for Christmas. On his last visit, he had given me homework to declutter my living room and to get rid of some books that had been collecting dust. I was proud of the work I had done in clearing space.
I brought the boxes of decorations up from the basement and set them in the living room in anticipation of Craig’s visit. In keeping with Craig’s motto of “Revisioning, Reconnecting and Repurposing” we used our regular decorations. The only new items were a couple of strings of lights, a garland from Enviro Plus, and a couple of Santa items I bought at the Grapevine Events Consignment Sale in October.
We opened all the boxes so that Craig could have an overview of what we had on hand. We decided to focus on the tree, wrapping it with cool white lights.
When Craig started to put the ornaments on the tree, I resisted the urge to tell him how we usually did things. After all, the whole point of having him there was to try something different. I didn’t realize how firmly we hold on to habits.
Ray gave me a Nativity set the first year we were married. The figures are a little chipped and repaired, which only gives it more character. When our kids were young, we had a tradition of Mary and Joseph travelling to the stable. This year, the Holy Family is already settled in.
Each year we hang as we hang this ornament we remember our friends Andrew and Corinne, and the fun time we had at their wedding.
I told Craig about a Newfoundland tradition when we put our mummers on the tree.
And then there are the Santas
My favourite Santa is one that my dad gave me about 25 years ago. It reminds me of the Good King Wenceslas part in The Christmas Messenger. I looked forward to watching it each year. Thanks to YouTube, I can watch it any time.
I started collecting Santas in 1986 and have about 30 of them. Some have been gifts, some found at yard sales or in second-hand stores. I have let some go over the years, as I have gotten new ones. I loved how Craig has displayed them around the living room this year.
As the darkness fell outside, we turned on the Christmas tree lights. It was lovely to see how Craig used our old decorations to create a new look.
