Holding Hands While Driving

When I was thinking of categories to have on my blog, I knew I wanted to have one where I could write about what is like to be 2 fifty-somethings in love. I just didn’t know what to call it. So, I did the thing that everyone does and googled it. As I scrolled through the many images and quotes about couples and love, I saw this one: “Holding hands while driving never gets old” and I knew that would be the title of this section.

When Ray and I were first dating, many of our evenings were spent driving his mom to anywhere she needed to go, whether it was shopping or visiting her aunts. This was part of the deal for Ray to be able to have the use of the family car. I sat in the front seat between Ray and his mom, and he would hold my hand. Later, when he bought his first car, and there were two separate seats in the front, that connection seemed more important, even though it was a little more challenging as he was driving a standard. Thirty-five years later, we still hold hands while he is driving the car, and it’s true, it never gets old.

I will share the good and the bad of how our relationship has grown and changed over the years as we moved through the different stages of our lives. I tell these stories in the hope that you will see yourself in them and find comfort, or insight, or just the realization that you are not the only one who has faced challenges. I also invite you to share your own stories and suggestions for topics that you would like to see here.
